Có ba loại chính: so sánh bằng as + tính từ + as (as fast as), so sánh hơn tính từ-er/more + tính từ + than (cheaper than, more efficient than) và so sánh nhất the + tính từ-est/the most + tính từ (the cheapest, the most efficient). Ngoài ra còn so sánh kém (less ... than, the least), so sánh lũy tiến (more and more) và cấu trúc càng... càng (the sooner, the better).

Q: Khi nào thêm -er/-est, khi nào dùng more/most?

Cách tạo dạng so sánh

Một số tính từ 2 âm tiết dùng được cả hai cách: quiet, simple, narrow, clever (simpler / more simple).
Trạng từ đuôi -ly dùng more/most: more quickly; trạng từ giống tính từ dùng -er: harder, faster, earlier, later.
So sánh kém: less + tính từ/trạng từ (less expensive), the least; fewer + danh từ số nhiều, less + danh từ không đếm được.
further còn có nghĩa thêm nữa: for further information.

S + V + tính từ-er / more + tính từ + than + N/đại từ/mệnh đềmuch / far / a lot / even / still / considerably / significantly / slightly / a little + so sánh hơn

Sau than có thể là đại từ tân ngữ (than him) hoặc mệnh đề (than he did). Khi so sánh hai thuộc tính, dùng that of / those of.
the + so sánh hơn + of the two: Ms. Ruiz is the more experienced of the two candidates.
Một số tính từ gốc Latin dùng to thay than: superior to, inferior to, senior to, junior to, prior to, prefer A to B.

Dùng in với nơi chốn hoặc tổ chức (in the city, in the company), of với nhóm hoặc thời gian (of all the candidates, of the year).
Có thể dùng sở hữu thay cho the: our biggest client.
Nhấn mạnh so sánh nhất: by far the best, the very best; thứ hạng: the second largest.
One of the + N số nhiều làm chủ ngữ → động từ số ít: One of the largest firms is based here.

Có thể rút gọn: The sooner, the better.
Với tính từ dài: more and more expensive (không nói more expensive and more expensive). Trang trọng hơn: increasingly expensive.

The earlier you book, the lower the fare will be.Bạn đặt càng sớm thì giá vé càng thấp.

So sánh với con số: gấp mấy lần, tăng bao nhiêu

Báo cáo doanh số, biểu đồ trong Part 7 và các câu Part 5 về số liệu dùng nhiều cấu trúc so sánh có con số. Cần nắm vị trí của số lần và giới từ đi kèm.

twice nghĩa là gấp hai; từ ba trở lên dùng three times, four times. Văn trang trọng không dùng two times as ... as.
by chỉ mức chênh lệch, to chỉ mức cuối cùng: Prices rose by $5 (tăng thêm 5 đô la) khác Prices rose to $5 (tăng lên mức 5 đô la).

So sánh rút gọn: than expected, than usual, than ever

Trong văn bản công việc, vế sau của câu so sánh thường được rút gọn chỉ còn một hai từ. Part 5 hay khuyết dạng so sánh hơn đứng trước các cụm này.

Thấy các cụm này ở cuối câu thì chỗ trống phía trước gần như chắc chắn là so sánh hơn: The results were ------- than expected → better, không phải good hay best.
Vế sau cũng có thể rút gọn thành than + chủ ngữ + trợ động từ: The new model sells better than the old one did.

Cụm so sánh cố định hay gặp trong TOEIC

Một số cụm mang hình thức so sánh nhưng đã thành cụm cố định với nghĩa riêng. Chúng xuất hiện dày đặc trong thông báo, email và hợp đồng.

rather than nối hai thành phần cùng dạng: repair rather than replace, by email rather than by phone.
no later than tương đương by khi nói hạn chót: no later than 5 p.m. on Friday = by 5 p.m. on Friday.

Mẹo làm bài TOEIC

Thấy than phía sau → chọn so sánh hơn (-er/more); thấy the ở trước và in/of/ever/that...have ever phía sau → chọn so sánh nhất; thấy as ... as → chọn dạng nguyên của tính từ/trạng từ.
Câu bổ nghĩa so sánh hơn: chọn much, far, even, still, a lot, considerably, significantly, slightly; loại very, more, so (very cheaper là sai).
Trong as ___ as vẫn phải xét tính từ hay trạng từ: as quickly as possible (bổ nghĩa động từ) và as efficient as (sau be).

Bổ nghĩa cho động từ completed nên dùng trạng từ.
