Wishes and the subjunctive

wish/if only를 사용한 소망 표현, it is time, would rather, as if/as though 구문, 그리고 recommend, suggest, require, It is essential that...

Wish와 if only

  • I wish I would... I wish I could...
  • 누군가에게 기원할 때는 wish + sb + N(We wish you every success)을 쓰고, 실제로 일어날 수 있는 미래의 바람에는 hope를 씁니다: I hope the shipment arrives tomorrow.

wish, if only, would rather, as if 뒤의 동사 시제 정리

  • 시간 표현으로 빠르게 고를 수 있습니다: now, currently, this year → 과거 시제, yesterday, last month, before the meeting → 과거완료.
If only we had booked earlier, we could have reserved the larger room. 뒷절에 could have + V3를 썼으므로 if only 절도 과거에 대한 이야기입니다.
I hope the client likes the design.

S + recommend / suggest / request / require / insist / propose / ask / demand / urge / advise + that + S + 동사원형부정: that + S + not + V수동: that + S + be + V3

It is + essential / important / imperative / vital / necessary / crucial / mandatory / advisable + that + S + 동사원형N (recommendation / request / requirement / suggestion / proposal) + that + S + 동사원형

  • The board approved the proposal that the branch remain open on Saturdays.

It is essential that the form be signed. It is likely that the form will be signed today.
It is important that he attend. It is clear that he attended the meeting.
The manager suggested that we hire a consultant. (제안하다)The survey suggests that customers prefer online ordering.

  • It is possible that the order will arrive a day early.

(He insisted that he had sent the email = 그는 이메일을 보냈다고 주장했다).

suggestsuggest that he go / suggest going*suggest him to go*
recommendrecommend that she apply / recommend applying*recommend that she applies* (토익 기준)
requirerequire that all staff wear / require staff to wear*require that all staff wears*

  1. 가장 많이 출제되는 패턴: recommend / request / require / suggest / insist / ask / propose / demand that + S + ___ → 주어가 3인칭 단수여도 동사원형(be, submit, attend)을 고릅니다. 오답 보기로는 -s형, will + V, to V가 자주 나옵니다.
It is essential / important / imperative / vital / necessary / mandatory that + S + 동사원형. 수동은 be + V3(that all forms be signed), 부정은 not + V(that he not be late)입니다.
  3. 패턴 구분: suggest / recommend + V-ing 또는 + that S + 동사원형이며, suggest는 절대 `sb to V`와 함께 쓰지 않습니다(*suggest him to go*는 틀림). 반면 ask / require / advise / request + sb + to V는 맞습니다.
  4. wish 뒤의 동사가 과거완료이면 → 과거에 대한 후회이고, It is time we ___ 뒤의 빈칸에는 → 과거 시제가 들어갑니다.

The director suggested that Mr. Kim attend the conference.

It's time we leave for the airport.

It's time we left for the airport.

It's time + S

She suggested me to contact the vendor.

She suggested that I contact the vendor.

  1. 1.The auditor recommended that the company ------- its travel expense policy.

    1. (A) reviewing
    2. (B) will review
    3. (C) to review
    4. (D) review

(D) review

recommend that + S + 동사원형(가정법 현재) → 주어가 단수여도 review입니다. reviewing과 to review는 that절의 동사 자리에 올 수 없고, will review는 가정법에 쓰이지 않습니다.

  2. 2.It is essential that every visitor ------- a badge while inside the laboratory.

    1. (A) wear
    2. (B) to wear
    3. (C) wore
    4. (D) wearing

(A) wear

It is essential that + S + 동사원형 → 주어 every visitor가 단수여도 wear. wore는 과거시제 동사인데 가정법은 시제에 따라 변하지 않으며, to wear와 wearing은 that절의 본동사가 될 수 없습니다.

  3. 3.Ms. Patel requested that the quarterly meeting ------- to Thursday afternoon.

    1. (A) to move
    2. (B) be moved
    3. (C) been moved
    4. (D) moving

(B) be moved

회의가 옮겨지는 것이므로 수동태 be + V3: be moved입니다. to move와 moving은 동사 자리에 올 수 없고, been moved는 been 앞에 조동사가 빠졌습니다.

  4. 4.Mr. Gomez wishes he ------- the contract more carefully before signing it last month.

    1. (A) reads
    2. (B) had read
    3. (C) has read
    4. (D) would read

(B) had read

과거 사실과 반대되는 소망(last month) → wish + S + had + V3: had read입니다. reads와 has read는 wish 뒤에서 시제가 과거로 한 단계 내려가지 않았고, would read는 지난달에 이미 일어난 일을 나타내지 못합니다.

  5. 5.It's high time we ------- our customer database; some records are ten years old.

    1. (A) updated
    2. (B) updating
    3. (C) will update
    4. (D) have updated

(A) updated

It's high time + S + 과거시제 → updated입니다. updating은 주어 we 뒤의 동사 자리에 올 수 없고, will update와 have updated는 이 구문 뒤에 쓰지 않습니다.

  6. 6.I'd rather you ------- the draft to the client until the legal team has reviewed it.

    1. (A) sending
    2. (B) not to send
    3. (C) didn't send
    4. (D) won't send

(C) didn't send

현재·미래에 대한 바람을 말할 때 would rather + 다른 주어 + 과거시제 → 부정형 didn't send입니다. sending과 not to send는 주어 you 뒤의 동사 자리에 올 수 없고, won't send는 would rather 뒤에서 시제가 과거로 내려가지 않았습니다.

  7. 7.The consultant suggested ------- the product launch until the spring trade show.

    1. (A) to postpone
    2. (B) postponing
    3. (C) postpone
    4. (D) postponed

(B) postponing

    suggest + V-ing(또는 suggest that + S + V) → postponing. suggest는 to V와 결합하지 않고, postpone/postponed는 suggest 바로 뒤에 올 수 없습니다.

  8. 8.Ms. Ortiz wishes she ------- the design conference in Lisbon next week, but she has a client meeting that day.

    1. (A) can attend
    2. (B) attends
    3. (C) could attend
    4. (D) will attend

(C) could attend

사실과 반대되는 능력·가능성에 대한 소망(회의가 있어서 갈 수 없음) → wish + S + could + V → could attend입니다. can attend, attends, will attend는 시제가 과거로 내려가지 않았습니다.

  9. 9.Mr. Grant always talks about the merger as though he ------- the company's owner.

    1. (A) be
    2. (B) being
    3. (C) been
    4. (D) were

(D) were

사실이 아닌 일(그는 회사 소유주가 아님)에는 as though + 과거시제를 쓰며, be동사는 were입니다. be는 동사원형이고, being과 been은 동사 자리에 올 수 없습니다.

  10. 10.It is vital that the cold-storage doors ------- open for more than a few minutes.

    1. (A) not to be left
    2. (B) not leave
    3. (C) not be left
    4. (D) don't be left

(C) not be left

가정법 수동태의 부정: that + S + not be + V3 → not be left. don't be left는 가정법에서 조동사 do를 쓰지 않고 be 앞에 not만 두므로 틀리고, not to be left는 본동사가 될 수 없으며, not leave는 능동이라 의미가 맞지 않습니다.

I hope the shipment arrives tomorrow. wish는 사실이 아니거나 실현되기 어려운 일을 말하므로 시제를 한 단계 과거로 씁니다: I wish the shipment arrived earlier(실제로는 늘 늦게 도착함). We wish you every success. I wish the shipment will arrive tomorrow라고는 하지 않습니다.

"I wish" 뒤에는 were를 쓰나요, was를 쓰나요?

I wish I were..., She wishes the office were closer.

현대 영어에서 가장 흔한 가정법 현재는 recommend, suggest, require, It is essential... We recommend that he submit the form.

왜 "he goes"가 아니라 "suggest that he go"라고 쓰나요?

영국식 영어에서는 suggest that he should go라고도 쓰며 역시 맞습니다. suggest가 "보여 주다"라는 뜻일 때만(The data suggest that sales are falling)

"It's time" 뒤에는 to V를 쓰나요, 과거 시제를 쓰나요?

It's time to begin the meeting은 그 일을 할 때가 되었다는 뜻일 뿐입니다. It's time we began(S + 과거 시제)은 진작 했어야 한다는 약간의 질책을 담고 있으며, high를 넣어 강조할 수 있습니다: It's high time we updated the website. It's time + S

주어 자신이 무엇을 더 하고 싶을 때는 would rather + 동사원형 (+ than + V): I would rather take the train than drive. I would rather you sent it today. I would rather you had told me earlier. would rather 뒤에는 to V를 쓰지 않습니다.
