Conjunctions

FANBOYS 등위접속사와 쉼표 규칙, both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also, whether...or 등의 상관접속사, as well as, rather than 및 병렬 구조를 다룹니다.

FANBOYS 등위접속사

일곱 개의 접속사 for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so는 대등한 두 요소(단어, 구, 독립절)를 연결합니다.

The flight was delayed, but we arrived in time.
She reviewed the draft and sent it back.
A, B, and C(and 앞의 쉼표는 선택 사항이며 Oxford comma라고 부릅니다).
for왜냐하면(격식체, 절만 연결하며 문장 중간에 위치)We cancelled the trip, for the budget was cut.
and그리고, 추가Sign the form and return it.
nor~도 또한 아니다(nor 뒤에 도치)He did not call, nor did he email.
but그러나(대조)The room is small but comfortable.
Pay online or by check.
so그래서(결과)The store was closed, so I came back later.

but, although, however와 so, because, therefore의 구분

Although prices rose, but demand stayed strong이나 Because the road was closed, so we took a detour처럼 쓰지 않습니다.
The figures, however, need to be checked.

  • along with, together with
Neither the manager nor the assistants are available.

We decided to lease rather than buy the equipment. Rather than hiring new staff, we outsourced the work.
  • instead of는 전치사이므로 항상 + N/V-ing입니다: instead of hiring.

따라서 both, either, neither, not only의 위치는 비교되는 요소에 따라 달라집니다.

  • 한쪽이 주어져 있으면 첫 번째 단어 바로 뒤가 어떤 종류인지 보고 두 번째 부분에 같은 종류의 보기를 고르세요: both to reduce paper waste and ___ printing costs → to lower.
  • 양쪽의 두 동사는 시제가 같아야 합니다: not only reorganized the stockroom but also introduced a new system.

  1. 상관접속사는 Part 5의 "점수 주는" 문제입니다. both → and, either → or, neither → nor, not only → but (also), whether → or (not)을 고릅니다.
  2. 주어-동사 수 일치 문제: both A and B → 복수 동사, either A or B, neither A nor B, not only A but also B → B(가까운 명사)에 일치, A as well as B → A에 일치합니다.
  3. 병렬 구조: and/or/but이나 상관접속사로 연결된 두 부분은 같은 형태여야 합니다(V-ing는 V-ing와, 형용사는 형용사와, to V는 to V와).
  4. so(접속사, 쉼표와 함께 두 절을 연결)와 therefore(부사, 마침표나 세미콜론 필요)를 구분하세요: ..., so we...이지만 ...; therefore, we...

The new system is efficient and saving money.

The new system is efficient and economical.

    2. (B) nor
    3. (C) and
    4. (D) but

  3. 3.The new scheduling software is not only faster ------- easier to use than the old system.

    1. (A) but also
    2. (B) and also
    3. (C) or also
    4. (D) as well

(A) but also

not only ... but also는 고정된 상관접속사입니다. and also, or also, as well은 not only와 결합하지 않습니다.

  4. 4.The job requires planning events, negotiating with vendors, and ------- budgets.

    1. (A) to manage
    2. (B) manage
    3. (C) managing
    4. (D) management

(C) managing

  5. 5.The CEO, as well as two senior directors, ------- attending the trade fair in Milan.

    1. (A) are
    2. (B) were
    3. (C) is
    4. (D) have

    정답: (C) is

as well as가 쓰이면 동사는 앞의 주어(The CEO, 단수)에 일치시킵니다 → is. are/were는 directors에 맞춘 함정이고, have는 여기서 attending과 결합하지 않습니다.

  6. 6.Either the regional managers or the director ------- the final hiring decision.

    1. (A) make
    2. (B) are making
    3. (C) have made
    4. (D) makes

(D) makes

either A or B → 동사는 B(가까운 명사 the director, 단수)에 일치시킵니다 → makes. make, are making, have made는 모두 복수형입니다.

  7. 7.The flight was delayed due to fog, ------- the delegation arrived after the opening speech.

    1. (A) therefore
    2. (B) because
    3. (C) so
    4. (D) however

    정답: (C) so

  8. 8.We have decided to lease the equipment rather than ------- it outright.

    1. (A) buys
    2. (B) buy
    3. (C) bought
    4. (D) to buying

(B) buy

rather than이 to lease와 병렬을 이루므로 동사원형 buy를 씁니다(to 생략). buys는 인칭에 따라 활용된 동사, bought는 과거형, to buying은 원형 부정사가 아니므로 모두 병렬 구조를 깨뜨립니다.

  9. 9.------- you travel by train or by plane, the company will reimburse your fare.

    1. (A) Either
    2. (B) Both
    3. (C) Neither
    4. (D) Whether

(D) Whether

문장 첫머리의 절이 "A이든 B이든"의 의미 → whether ... or.

  10. 10.The caterer arrived an hour late; -------, the luncheon started on schedule.

    1. (A) nevertheless
    2. (B) but
    3. (C) yet
    4. (D) although

(A) nevertheless

FANBOYS는 일곱 개의 등위접속사 for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so를 외우는 방법입니다. The store was closed, so I came back later.

Ms. Lee wrote the report, and Mr. Park checked it. Ms. Lee wrote and checked the report.

"Neither...nor"

Neither the invoice nor the receipts were attached, 하지만 Neither the receipts nor the invoice was attached. 이 규칙은 either...or와 not only...but also에도 적용됩니다. both...and만 항상 복수 동사를 씁니다.

"Not only...but also"에는 반드시 "also"가 있어야 하나요?

반드시 그렇지는 않습니다. not only A but B나 not only A but B as well로 쓸 수 있으며, also는 둘째 부분의 주어 뒤에 올 수도 있습니다: Not only did the firm cut costs, but it also increased sales.

"As well as"는 "and"와 어떻게 다른가요?

A and B가 주어이면 동사는 복수입니다. A as well as B는 B를 덧붙인 정보로 보므로 동사는 A에 일치시킵니다: The CEO as well as two directors is attending. as well as As well as managing the budget, she trains new staff.

"So"와 "therefore"는 어떻게 다른가요?

It rained, so the event moved indoors. therefore는 부사로, 앞에 마침표나 세미콜론이 필요하고 보통 뒤에 쉼표를 붙입니다: It rained; therefore, the event moved indoors. It rained, therefore the event moved indoors라고 쓰면 comma splice 오류입니다.
