Reported speech

She said the office opens at 8.

I will call you" → He said he would call me.

Say, tell

  • 항상 tell을 쓰는 고정 표현이 있습니다: tell the truth, tell a lie, tell a story, tell the difference. say는 say hello, say goodbye, say a few words, say so와 함께 씁니다.
  • Part 5에서 빈칸 바로 뒤에 사람(us, the staff, Ms. Kim)이 오고 그다음 that이 오면 told / informed / assured / notified / reminded를, 빈칸 바로 뒤에 that이나 to + 사람이 오면 said / announced / explained / confirmed를 고르세요.

명령과 요청은 tell / ask + O + (not) to V로 바꿉니다.

  • suggest는 sb to V와 함께 쓰지 않습니다. suggest V-ing 또는 suggest that S (should) V를 씁니다.
He said to me that...; *said me*라고 하지 않습니다.

  • Mr. Chen suggested holding the training session online.Chen

  • 거절은 refuse to V, 인정은 admit V-ing / admit that, 부인은 deny V-ing / deny that을 씁니다.

  1. Part 5에서는 전달 동사 뒤의 패턴을 자주 묻습니다: remind / advise / ask / instruct / encourage + sb + to V; suggest / recommend / deny / admit + V-ing; promise / agree / refuse / offer / decide + to V. 본동사를 보고 to V와 V-ing 중에서 고르세요.
  2. say는 사람 목적어를 바로 취하지 않고(say that, say to sb), tell은 항상 사람 목적어가 필요합니다(tell sb that, tell sb to V). Mr. Ono ___ us that... 문제 → told.
  3. 간접의문문은 S + V 어순을 씁니다: asked where the office was이지 where was the office가 아닙니다.

She said me that the meeting was cancelled.

She told me that the meeting was cancelled.

suggest + V-ing 또는 that절.

He denied to take the documents.

He denied taking the documents.

  1. 1.Mr. Ono ------- us that the training session had been moved to Room 3.

    1. (A) said
    2. (B) told
    3. (C) spoke
    4. (D) talked

(B) told

동사 바로 뒤에 사람 목적어 us가 있으므로 tell sb that: told. say는 사람 목적어를 바로 취하지 않고(said to us), spoke/talked는 이렇게 that절과 결합하지 않습니다.

  2. 2.The receptionist reminded all visitors ------- their badges at the front desk.

    1. (A) to return
    2. (B) returning
    3. (C) return
    4. (D) returned

(A) to return

remind + O + to V → to return. returning, return, returned는 모두 패턴에 맞지 않습니다.

  3. 3.The supplier denied ------- the wrong parts to our factory.

    1. (A) to send
    2. (B) send
    3. (C) sends
    4. (D) sending

(D) sending

  4. 4.The contractor promised ------- the renovation by the end of the month.

    1. (A) to finish
    2. (B) finishing
    3. (C) finish
    4. (D) finished

(A) to finish

promise + to V → to finish. promise는 V-ing나 to 없는 동사원형과 결합하지 않습니다.

  5. 5.The interviewer asked Ms. Park why ------- her previous position.

    1. (A) did she leave
    2. (B) she had left
    3. (C) had she left
    4. (D) she leaves

(B) she had left

간접의문문은 S + V 어순을 쓰고 asked 뒤에서 시제를 과거 쪽으로 일치시킵니다 → she had left. did she leave/had she left는 의문문 어순 그대로이고, she leaves는 시제 일치가 되지 않아 의미도 맞지 않습니다.

  6. 6.Our director suggested ------- the quarterly meeting online to save travel costs.

    1. (A) us to hold
    2. (B) to hold
    3. (C) hold
    4. (D) holding

(D) holding

suggest + V-ing → holding. suggest는 sb to V나 to V와는 절대 결합하지 않습니다.

  7. 7.The supervisor told the new staff ------- their laptops unattended in the meeting room.

    1. (A) to not leaving
    2. (B) don't leave
    3. (C) not to leave
    4. (D) not leaving

(C) not to leave

부정 명령문은 tell + O + not to V로 전환합니다 → not to leave. don't leave는 직접화법 형태 그대로이고, to not leaving/not leaving은 패턴에 맞지 않습니다.

  8. 8.Mr. Haddad asked the technician ------- the color printer on the third floor had been repaired yet.

    1. (A) that
    2. (B) what
    3. (C) which
    4. (D) whether

(D) whether

asked + O 뒤의 Yes/No 간접의문문은 if/whether를 씁니다: whether. that은 의문문을 이끌지 않고, what, which는 절 안에 빠진 성분이 있어야 하는데 뒤 절은 이미 완전합니다.

  9. 9.At yesterday's orientation, Ms. Ibarra explained that the cafeteria ------- at 7 a.m. every weekday, so new hires can eat before their shifts.

    1. (A) opening
    2. (B) to open
    3. (C) opens
    4. (D) have opened

(C) opens

지금도 여전히 사실인 내용(every weekday, can eat)이므로 시제를 바꾸지 않아도 됩니다: opens. opening과 to open은 시제를 가진 동사가 아니고, have opened는 단수 주어 the cafeteria와 수 일치가 맞지 않으며 at 7 a.m. every weekday와도 어울리지 않습니다.

  10. 10.On March 3, the facilities manager announced that the elevator would be inspected -------, and the inspection did take place on March 4.

    1. (A) tomorrow
    2. (B) the following day
    3. (C) the day before
    4. (D) a day ago

(B) the following day

나중 시점에서 전달할 때는 tomorrow를 the following day로 바꾸며, 점검이 3월 4일에 실시되었다는 내용이 이를 뒷받침합니다: the following day. tomorrow는 오늘을 기준으로 할 때만 맞고, the day before와 a day ago는 과거를 나타내어 would be inspected와 모순됩니다.

Ms. Lee said, "I am busy." 대신 Ms. Lee said (that) she was busy.

(She said the office opens at 8), 또는 동사가 이미 would, could, should, might, had + V3일 때는 바꿀 필요가 없습니다.

He told me that..., He told the staff to.... said는 듣는 사람을 바로 취하지 않습니다: He said that... 또는 He said to me that.... 사람이면 told, that이나 to + 사람이면 said입니다.

He asked where the office was. 간접의문문은 S + V 어순을 쓰고 do/does/did를 빼며, Yes/No 의문문에는 if/whether를 씁니다. (Could you tell me where the office is?)

tell / ask / instruct / order + 사람 + to V를 쓰고, 부정은 not to V입니다. "Please wait here." → She asked us to wait there. "Don't leave the door open." → He told us not to leave the door open. that + 명령문은 쓰지 않으며, not은 듣는 사람 앞이 아니라 to V 바로 앞에 둡니다.

suggest에는 두 가지 패턴이 있습니다: suggest + V-ing(He suggested holding the meeting online)와 suggest that + S + 동사원형(He suggested that we hold the meeting online). suggest sb to V는 쓰지 않습니다. recommend도 이 두 패턴을 쓰며, recommend sb to V는 영국 영어에서 보이기도 하지만 토익에서 안전한 정답은 여전히 V-ing나 that절입니다.
