S + modal + V (동사원형)S + modal + be + V3 (수동)S + modal + have + V3 (과거 / 추측)
She can speak three languages.
  • 3인칭 단수에도 -s를 붙이지 않습니다: He must sign(musts가 아님).
  • 부정문은 not을 붙이고, 의문문은 조동사를 주어 앞으로 보냅니다: cannot/can't, should not, may not, Could you ...?
  • 조동사 두 개를 연달아 쓰지 않습니다: will can이 아니라 will be able to.
  • 수동태: 조동사 + be + V3; 완료형: 조동사 + have + V3; 진행형: 조동사 + be + V-ing.

  • 조동사 뒤에는 절대 V-ing, V3, to V, -s가 붙은 동사가 오지 않습니다: should submits, can submitted, must to submit은 모두 틀립니다.

  • be able to: can이 없는 시제에서 쓰고(will be able to, has been able to), 과거에 특정한 일을 한 번 해낸 경우에 씁니다: We were able to finish on time(이런 긍정문에서는 보통 could를 쓰지 않음).
  • may: 격식 있는 허가 요청(May I ...?), 공지문에서의 허가(Employees may park in Lot B). may not = 허용되지 않는다.

조동사에는 V-ing, V3, 미래형이 없으므로 will must나 has could라고 할 수 없습니다.

Yesterday we had to work late라고 하고 must worked라고 쓰지 않습니다.
특정한 일을 한 번 해낸 경우에는 was/were able to나 managed to를 씁니다.
  • 이 표현들은 다른 조동사 뒤에 올 수 있습니다: may have to, might be able to, should be allowed to.

S + modal + 부사 + VS + modal + 부사 + be + V3S + modal + be + 부사 + V3
The new software can easily handle large files.
  • 수동: 부사는 조동사 뒤나 be와 V3 사이에 옵니다: can easily be accessed와 can be easily accessed 모두 맞습니다.
You should not necessarily accept the first offer.
  • 자주 나오는 표현: will soon be, can now be, should always be, must first be, may also be, will likely be. may well + V는 ~할 가능성이 매우 높다는 뜻입니다: Prices may well rise next year.

  1. 빠르게 점수를 얻는 규칙: 조동사(can, could, may, might, must, should, will, would) 뒤에는 항상 to 없는 동사원형이 옵니다. should, must, will 바로 뒤가 빈칸이면 동사원형(submit)을 고르고 submits/submitted/submitting/to submit은 소거합니다. 수동태: 조동사 + be + V3.
  2. ought to / have to / need to / be able to + V(to 있음)와 must / should / can + V(to 없음)를 구별하세요. had better + V와 would rather + V도 자주 출제됩니다.
Should you have any questions, please contact ...(= If you have any questions). 문장 첫머리의 빈칸 + you have → Should를 고릅니다.
Would you mind + V-ing, Would you like + to V, Could you please + V. mind에 대한 대답 Not at all은 승낙을 뜻합니다.

  1. 1.Visitors must ------- their identification at the front desk.

    1. (A) to show
    2. (B) showing
    3. (C) show
    4. (D) showed

(C) show

조동사 must 뒤에는 동사원형이 오므로 show가 정답입니다. to show, showing, showed는 모두 틀립니다.

  2. 2.All overtime hours must ------- by a department supervisor at least one day in advance.

    1. (A) approve
    2. (B) be approved
    3. (C) approving
    4. (D) been approved

(B) be approved

초과 근무 시간은 (by a department supervisor) 승인되는 대상이므로 조동사 뒤에 수동태 be approved를 씁니다. approve는 능동태인데 목적어가 없고, approving과 been approved는 must 바로 뒤에 올 수 없습니다.

  3. 3.Thanks to the extra staff, the warehouse ------- able to ship every holiday order on time last year.

    1. (A) could
    2. (B) had
    3. (C) did
    4. (D) was

(D) was

last year가 있으므로 be able to의 과거형 was able to를 씁니다. could, had, did는 able to와 함께 쓸 수 없습니다.

  4. 4.New employees ought ------- the safety manual before operating any of the machinery.

    1. (A) read
    2. (B) reading
    3. (C) reads
    4. (D) to read

(D) to read

ought는 항상 to + V와 함께 쓰므로 to read입니다. read, reading, reads는 to가 빠졌거나 형태가 틀렸습니다.

  5. 5.You ------- bring your own laptop to the workshop because computers will be provided.

    1. (A) must
    2. (B) don't have to
    3. (C) have to
    4. (D) should

(B) don't have to

컴퓨터가 제공되므로 가져올 필요가 없다는 뜻의 don't have to(~할 필요가 없다)가 정답입니다. must, have to, should는 모두 가져와야 한다는 의미라서 문장의 이유와 모순됩니다.

  6. 6.The report ------- have been sent to the wrong address, as the client never received it.

    1. (A) need
    2. (B) must
    3. (C) can
    4. (D) would

(B) must

근거(고객이 받지 못함)를 바탕으로 과거의 일을 확신하여 추측하는 must have + 과거분사가 정답입니다. need have는 부정형(needn't have)으로만 쓰고, can have는 긍정문에 쓰지 않으며, would have는 조건이 필요합니다.

  7. 7.Mr. Novak ------- have seen the revised schedule, because it was posted only after he left for the airport.

    1. (A) can't
    2. (B) needn't
    3. (C) should
    4. (D) must

(A) can't

일정표는 그가 떠난 후에 게시되었으므로 그가 봤을 리가 없습니다: can't have seen. must have seen(봤음에 틀림없다)과 should have seen(봤어야 했다)은 이유와 모순되고, needn't have seen(봤지만 볼 필요는 없었다)도 모순됩니다.

  8. 8.Mr. Harris ------- have reserved the conference room earlier; now all the rooms are booked.

    1. (A) should
    2. (B) must
    3. (C) will
    4. (D) can

(A) should

should have + 과거분사는 했어야 했는데 하지 않은 일(지금은 회의실이 모두 예약됨)을 나타냅니다. must have는 추측, will have는 미래완료이고, can have는 틀린 구조입니다.

  9. 9.Would you mind ------- the sales figures before they are sent to the regional manager?

    1. (A) checking
    2. (B) to check
    3. (C) check
    4. (D) checked

(A) checking

Would you mind + V-ing 구조이므로 checking을 씁니다. to check, check, checked는 mind 뒤에 올 수 없습니다.

  10. 10.------- the shipment arrive damaged, please photograph the packaging before opening it.

    1. (A) If
    2. (B) Would
    3. (C) Should
    4. (D) Had

(C) Should

Should the shipment arrive(= If the shipment arrives)를 씁니다.

조동사(modal verbs)는 본동사 앞에 와서 능력, 허가, 의무, 조언, 추측의 뜻을 더하는 can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would입니다.

Must와 have to는 어떻게 다른가요?

(All visitors must sign in). Have to는 외부 상황이나 규정에서 오는 의무를 강조하며 모든 시제에 쓸 수 있습니다(had to, will have to). must에는 과거형이 없으므로 과거의 의무는 항상 had to로 나타냅니다.

Mustn't와 don't have to는 어떻게 다른가요?

Employees must not share their passwords. don't have to / don't need to / needn't + V는 ~할 필요가 없다, 의무가 아니다라는 뜻으로, 해도 괜찮습니다: You don't have to bring a laptop.

"Should have + V3"는 무슨 뜻인가요?

We should have ordered more brochures. shouldn't have + V3는 ~하지 말았어야 했는데 (했다)라는 뜻입니다. 같은 문형의 다른 형태: must have + V3(~했음이 틀림없다), could have + V3(~할 수도 있었다), can't have + V3(~했을 리가 없다).

Can과 be able to는 어떻게 다른가요?

현재에서는 can과 am/is/are able to의 뜻이 비슷하지만 can이 더 흔합니다. Be able to는 can이 없는 시제(will be able to, has been able to)와 다른 조동사 뒤(might be able to)에서 꼭 필요합니다. 과거에 특정한 일을 한 번 해낸 경우에는 could 대신 was/were able to를 씁니다: We were able to finish on time.

"Should you have any questions"

Should you have any questions, please contact us = If you have any questions, please contact us. Should + 주어 뒤에는 has나 having이 아니라 동사원형(have, require, need)이 옵니다.
