  1. There ___ several options 문제 → there가 아니라 there 뒤의 명사에 맞춰 동사(are)를 고릅니다.
  2. is + adj + to V / that ... 앞의 주어 자리 빈칸 → 정답은 There나 This가 아니라 It입니다. 반대로 존재를 나타내는 is/are + 명사 + (V-ing/to V/전치사) 앞이면 → There입니다.
  3. It takes + (sb) + 시간 + to V와 It is said / believed / expected that...(또는 S is expected to V)는 Part 5/6의 뉴스와 공지문에 자주 나오는 패턴입니다.

  1. 1.------- are several vacancies in the accounting department.

    1. (A) There
    2. (B) It
    3. (C) They
    4. (D) This

(A) There

복수 명사 several vacancies의 존재를 나타내므로 There are. It/This는 is와 결합하고, They are vacancies는 의미가 맞지 않습니다(존재를 말하는 표현이 아님).

  2. 2.There ------- a significant increase in online orders since the website was redesigned.

    1. (A) have been
    2. (B) are
    3. (C) has been
    4. (D) were

(C) has been

be동사는 there 뒤의 명사 a significant increase(단수)에 일치시키며, since가 있으므로 현재완료 → has been. have been/are/were는 복수형입니다.

  3. 3.------- is important to back up all project files every evening.

    1. (A) It
    2. (B) There
    3. (C) This
    4. (D) What

    정답: (A) It

It + be + 형용사 + to V 패턴: it은 to back up... There는 형용사 + to V와 결합하지 않고, This와 What은 이 패턴에서 가주어로 쓰이지 않습니다.

  4. 4.It ------- about forty minutes to get from the hotel to the convention center by taxi.

    1. (A) spends
    2. (B) takes
    3. (C) lasts
    4. (D) needs

(B) takes

고정 표현 It takes (+ sb) + 시간 + to V → takes. spend는 사람을 주어로 쓰고, lasts와 needs는 이 It ... to V 패턴에 쓰이지 않습니다.

  5. 5.It is expected ------- the new branch will open in early spring.

    1. (A) what
    2. (B) which
    3. (C) to
    4. (D) that

(D) that

It is expected / said / believed + that + 절 패턴 → that. what/which는 이 절을 이끌지 못하고, to는 동사원형이 필요하므로 절과 결합하지 않습니다.

  6. 6.The new branch is expected ------- in early spring.

    1. (A) opening
    2. (B) that opens
    3. (C) to open
    4. (D) open

(C) to open

S + is expected + to V → to open. opening, that opens, open은 모두 패턴에 맞지 않습니다.

  7. 7.There ------- not enough space in the warehouse for the holiday stock.

    1. (A) are
    2. (B) be
    3. (C) have
    4. (D) is

    정답: (D) is

be동사는 there 뒤의 명사에 일치시키며, space는 불가산 명사이므로 is. are는 복수형이고, be는 변화하지 않은 형태이며, have는 이 패턴에서 there 뒤에 쓰지 않습니다.

  8. 8.It was Ms. Owen ------- negotiated the contract with the overseas supplier.

    1. (A) whom
    2. (B) which
    3. (C) who
    4. (D) whose

(C) who

강조 구문(분열문) It was + 사람 + who/that + V로 Ms. Owen을 강조합니다.

  9. 9.It is in October ------- our annual clearance sale begins.

    1. (A) when it
    2. (B) that
    3. (C) where
    4. (D) which

(B) that

It is + in October + that + 나머지 → that. where는 장소에 쓰고, which는 전치사구를 강조하는 강조 구문에 쓰지 않으며, when it은 주어가 중복됩니다.

  10. 10.------- is about twelve kilometers from the international airport to our head office downtown.

    1. (A) It
    2. (B) There
    3. (C) This
    4. (D) What

    정답: (A) It

It is ... from A to B. There, This, What은 이 구문에서 거리를 나타내는 주어로 쓰이지 않습니다.

There is a meeting at 3 p.m.

"There is"와 "there are" 중 무엇을 쓰나요?

단수 명사나 불가산 명사 → there is(There is little information), 복수 명사 → there are(There are several vacancies). There is a printer and two scanners in the room.

it과 there는 각각 언제 쓰나요?

There is a café on the ground floor. it은 이미 언급된 것을 다시 가리키거나 to V, that절, 시간, 날씨, 거리의 가주어가 됩니다: It is open until 6 p.m., It is important to arrive early. 요령: be + 형용사 + to V/that 앞이면 It, be + 명사 (+ 장소) 앞이면 There입니다.

"It takes"

It takes me forty minutes to get to work. 마찬가지로 It costs (+ sb) + 금액 + to V는 비용을 말합니다: It cost the company $40,000 to replace the roof.

"It is said that"과 "He is said to"는 어떻게 다른가요?

It is said that he is an expert는 가주어 it에 that절을 씁니다. He is said to be an expert는 절의 주어를 문두로 올리고 to V를 씁니다. He is believed to have sold his shares.

It was Ms. Owen who negotiated the contract(다른 사람이 아니라 바로 Ms. Owen임을 강조). 구조: It is/was + 강조할 부분 + that/who + 나머지 부분. It was not until ... that ...
