접속부사: however, therefore, moreover

Sales rose; however, profits fell.
  • 같은 뜻의 접속사와 구별하세요: although, but은 접속사이고 however는 부사입니다. because, so는 접속사이고 therefore는 부사입니다.

  • 조동사가 없는 문장은 do/does/did를 빌려 씁니다: Seldom does the manager leave before 7 p.m.
Usually, the manager leaves at 6 p.m.

  3. 뜻이 다른 쌍에 주의하세요: work hard(열심히)와 hardly work(거의 ~하지 않다); arrive late와 lately(최근에, 현재완료와 함께 사용).

(Fortunately, no one was hurt).

세 위치가 있습니다: 문장 앞(논평, 연결 부사: Unfortunately, However), 문장 중간(일반동사 앞, be 동사 뒤, 첫 번째 조동사 뒤: She rarely misses a deadline, It has already been shipped), 문장 끝(방법, 장소, 시간). We carefully checked the invoice라고 하며 checked carefully the invoice라고 하지 않습니다.

hard는 형용사이자 부사로, 열심히, 힘들게라는 뜻입니다: She works hard. hardly는 뜻이 전혀 다른 부사로, 거의 ~않다는 뜻입니다: She hardly works (그녀는 거의 일하지 않는다). hardly 자체에 부정의 뜻이 있으므로 not을 함께 쓰지 않으며, 보통 any, ever, at all과 함께 씁니다. 비슷한 쌍: late/lately, high/highly, near/nearly, close/closely.

The client has already paid. yet(아직, 지금까지)은 부정문과 의문문에서 문장 끝에 씁니다: Has the package arrived yet?. still(여전히)은 계속되고 있는 일을 나타내며, 문장 중간에 오고 부정문에서는 not 앞에 옵니다: He still has not replied. 격식체 구조 have yet to + V는 아직 ~하지 않았다는 뜻입니다.

However, profits fell.) 세미콜론을 쓰는 것입니다(Sales rose; however, profits fell.).
